The design concept of the Stanley takes on a Victorian theme, retaining the high ceilings and olde worlde charm of the era while incorporating every comfort and luxury for the traveller of today. Hotel facilities at the Stanley include 225 luxurious rooms with private bathroom and shower, hair dryer, three telephones, TV with CNN, BBC, M-Net, Supersport and three movie channels. The rooms are all individually air-conditioned and have double-glazed windows, safe and minibar in the rooms. - The Norfolk Hotel
Creating a tradition destined to endure was the Christmas present that Major C.G.R. Ringer gave to Kenya and Nairobi (and just what they wanted) when he opened his little Norfolk Hotel in the year 1904. Then and now, the Norfolk has been totally and inescapably an integral part of the country’s history. One could, without fear of correction, say that had there, in fact, been no Norfolk Hotel, there might never have been the capital. The Giraffe Manor, built in 1932 by Sir David Duncan, is situated on 120 acres of land just a few miles from the centre of Nairobi, Kenya's capital city. In 1974, Jock Leslie-Melville, grandson of a Scottish earl, and his wife Betty, who founded the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), bought the Manor. They moved five endangered baby Rothschild giraffe to their property where they were successfully reared and now have their own babies.
When Jock died, Betty decided to open her house to visitors. Exclusive, spacious and elegant, it is the only place in the world that you can feed giraffe from your second floor bedroom window, over the lunch table, and at the front door. Guests can feed and photograph the giraffe and the warthogs at the manor and wander through the adjoining forest to view the bushbuck, dik dik and more than 180 species of birds.
Accommodation is in four double rooms with baths, as well as one double room with a shower. One bedroom is furnished with Karen Blixen's ("Out of Africa") furniture that she gave to Jock's mother when she left Kenya. Meals are prepared by a gourmet chef and include tea, wine and cocktails. The five thatched tree houses are spacious (75 sq m), and located far apart, hidden by plenty of natural bush. A family-cottage treelodge is also available, accommodating two extra beds. Guests have full use of the 10 acre grounds, including the swimming pool and adjoining bar and dining room. Breakfast and lunch can be served on the shady lawns, cocktails are served by the campfire, and dinner is served in an open boma with a fireplace and lit with candles. Several visiting chefs from Belgium have specially trained the Kenyan chefs, renowned for serving refined food. Macushla House set in the heart of Langata, but only 18km from the city centre of Nairobi, overlooks one of the last pockets of indigenous forests, is the ideal location for the travellers who want to escape the stress of the city centre. Tastefully furnished, Macushla House has 2 lounges with a fireplace, each with a terrace leading to the swimming pool, a private study, cosy resident bar, dining room and 2 separate bedroom wings. - Karen Blixen Coffee Garden and Cottages
The cottages are located in Karen, a beautiful, peaceful suburb approximately 20 miles from downtown Nairobi. The cottages are located in the midst of one of the oldest formal gardens in Kenya which have huge jacaranda, candelabra, cactus, bottlebrush, and other trees. Over 200 types of flowers bloom through the year and numerous bird feeders attract hundreds of varieties of birds.
Cottage facilities house as many as 30 guests. Eight of the cottages have individual suites and three have two bedroom suites with a common large sitting room. The honeymoon cottage has a large bedroom and sitting room each with a fireplace.
The cottages have been designed after the historic Swedo House to give a sense of reliving history in elegant style. All well appointed cottages have hi-beam ceilings with fireplaces, wood and mazeras stone floors. Mini bars, satellite TVs and internet connections have also been installed.
Each bedroom has a large bathroom with its own shower and bath. Internet connections and phones are available in all rooms. Three cottages have two private suites with a separate dressing room.
All cottages have a verandah for relaxing while enjoying the birds, butterflies and flowers of the garden. We provide feeders to attract a wide variety of birds. Residents can also enjoy twenty-four-hour room service. A private swimming poll and private garden bar are available for a relaxing afternoon.
