Keekorok Lodge – Masai Mara

Located in the very heart of Kenya’s fabled Masai Mara National Reserve, Keekorok, meaning motley abundance in the local Masai language, was constructed in 1962 on a choice eighty acre site in an area of permanent springs and lush grassland and was the first lodge to be built in the Masai Mara.
Keekorok Lodge is sited in the direct path of the world famous Mara wildebeest migration. At the height of the migration, Keekorok is surrounded by a swarming mass of animals and there is hardly need to go for a game drive. For animals, landscape and sheer beauty, the Masai Mara is the most spectacular of all Kenyan parks and reserves. Keekorok’s charm lies in its setting, its ease of access from Nairobi and the liberal use of local sand river stone and cedar wood in its construction.
Accommodation comprises stone built bungalows with private balconies. All with en suite bathrooms. They are 89 standard rooms, 8 superior rooms, 4 suites. The liberal use of cedar wood, pink and gray Sand River stone and other indigenous building materials offset the green lawns and colorful bougainvillea.
A 300 meter raised walkway winds through the forest in front of the lodge to a thatched sundowner bar overlooking the plains of the Masai Mara and a pool with resident hippos. The terrace overlooks mowed lawns and a swimming pool. There are no fences around Keekorok Lodge thus it is not uncommon to see elephants and buffalos on the perimeter of the grounds.
Accommodation is on a Full Board basis that includes morning tea or coffee, breakfast, luncheon, afternoon tea and dinner. Luncheon boxes are available by prior request for guests taking all-day game drives. Well-trained chefs prepare international and local delicacies.
Wildlife and videos are screened, and lectures on Maasai lifestyle are held regularly. Hot air balloon safaris over the Maasai Mara can also be arranged at dawn ending in a champagne style breakfast.
In the evening, many guests sit around the log fire in the lounge, which creates an opportunity to meet fellow travellers from around the world.
