Nestling in the heart of a coffee plantation on the shores of Lake Duluti, near to Arusha, the gateway town of Tanzania’s spectacular national parks, Mountain Village - Arusha is the perfect place to relax before or after experiencing the adventure of a Serena Safari.
Mountain Village will give guests a true experience of a coffee plantation and is designed as an African village. It is renowned for its collection of spectacular bougainvillaea. Accommodation is housed in banana stem thatched huts, grouped in semi-circles around tropical shade trees. All guest rooms have private balconies that boast magnificent views of the mighty snow-capped Kilimanjaro on one side and Lake Duluti and the rugged peaks of Mount Meru on the other. Mountain Village, built in January 1989, has been under Serena management since 1st October 2000.
The area is an ornithologist’s paradise. The nature trail around the magical Lake Duluti provides a sanctuary for over 130 different bird species. Guests can take a relaxing walk along Lake Duluti spotting all the stunning African birds or wander through the coffee plantations around the lodge.
The Lodge has 46 guest rooms (36 twins and six superior rooms). The restaurant and bar are located in the Old Colonial Farmhouse which has all modern amenities. Activities include lake shore walks to see the Colobus monkeys, forest antelope and the abundant bush life. Excursions can be made to Mount Meru, mountain climbing of the famous Mount Kilimanjaro and trips to the markets of Arusha.
Hatari Lodge is located adjoining one of Africa’s most beautiful and diverse national parks, where the worlds highest free standing mountain, Kilimanjaro rises majestically 5,892 metres into the blue skies above. Hatari Lodge is situated in a malaria free altitude above 5.000 ft on the northern edge of Arusha National Park, with its unspoilt views of lakes and craters, its magical rain forests, and the 4,566 metre high dormant volcano Mount Meru, rising elegantly in the background.
Hatari Lodge consists of three buildings beautifully situated in acacia woodland with breathtaking views onto the Momella swamp, rich with wildlife, and across to the majestic Kilimanjaro.
The quite unique “Hatari-Lodge” offers 9 extremely comfortably furnished rooms, each with an open fireplace and a spacious bathroom en suite. Each room has been lovingly decorated by Marlies in a retro style, evoking the 60’s and 70’s - the time of "Hatari!" and the beginning of safaris in Tanzania.
The breakfast terrace, bordered by sweet smelling acacias, as well as the viewing platform onto the Momella swamps offers impressive views of Mt. Meru, Kilimanjaro and the wildlife from close by. Here you enjoy classic sunsets over the snows of Kilimanjaro.
Throughout the 1970’s and early 1980’s, the Lodge and Sanctuary were run by Dr. Andreas Von Nagy and members of his family.
They became a very popular stop over for many VIP’s and Government visitors. Various Presidents of African Countries, celebrities, and members of European Royal Families stayed at the Lodge and a visit to the Sanctuary was always included in the official itineraries of Government visitors when in Arusha.
Although Dr. Von Nagy is no longer with us, his son continues to live nearby to the Lodge and to manage the Sanctuary which his father started some 35 years ago.
He, together with the Management and Staff of ‘Intimate Places’ look forward to welcoming you to Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary in a time-honoured tradition.
